The gateway offers “a journey without borders through the Col de Tende” which, from Borgo San Dalmazzo to Breil-sur-Roya, links the Vermenagna Valley in Italy with the Roya Valley in France. The journey follows the historic railway line that crosses the Alps and reaches the Mediterranean Sea, ending in Ventimiglia or Nice, depending on the route chosen. The multimedia tour presents the itinerary, the railway, the town and its valleys, and the history of the station.

The VeRo itinerary and the exhibition were launched in 2026 in the run-up to the centenary of the Cuneo–Ventimiglia–Nice line (1928–2028).

The tour is designed to be enjoyed freely and at your own pace. To guide you, you will find a leaflet available at the bottom of the page.

On the first floor, the tour features a presentation of the VeRo itinerary and a visual and geographical exploration of the area.

On the ground floor, it features the Sala Reale, dedicated to the history of the station and the Savoy family’s time there, and the ‘Gateway to the Valleys’

More specifically, the rooms on the first floor showcase the two cross-border valleys, the Roya and Vermenagna, alongside the Gesso and Stura valleys, which converge naturally at Borgo San Dalmazzo.

Room 1 – Through the Tunnel

A luminous wall introduces visitors to the geography, landscapes and unique character of the railway line that runs through them.

Room 2 – Inside the Tent. Towards a balance between man and nature

The tent’s setting, the seating and the soft flooring invite you to slow down, to get in tune with the rhythm of nature and the changing of the seasons. You are immersed in music and images that offer a evocative view of the Stura, Gesso, Vermenagna and Roya valleys, together with the town of Borgo San Dalmazzo.

Room 3 – Postcards from the region. An invitation to explore

You are welcomed by an interactive installation: a projected map offers an overview of the area’s geography, encompassing the town of Borgo San Dalmazzo and its valleys. By freely choosing one of the 40 postcards, each visitor can create their own journey of discovery, following the slideshows, suggestions, references and connections between the valleys.

Room 4 – Let’s fly!

In this room, you can try out paragliding flight simulators that allow you to explore the area stretching from Borgo San Dalmazzo towards the French border, crossing the Vermenagna, Gesso and Stura valleys. An invitation to view the landscape from above and experience a real adventure!

The visit to the ground floor includes the Royal Hall and the Porta delle Valli

Sala Reale – Borgo San Dalmazzo railway station

This small room, built in 1914, was a passageway reserved for the royal family of Savoy and is adorned with elegant original marble cladding.

Here you can discover why the station was so important to Borgo San Dalmazzo: its vital role in the town’s industrial, tourist and hospitality sectors, and its significance in daily life and in both personal and communal moments within the town.

An introductory video – produced thanks to the historical research of Professor Walter Cesana, who has been studying the history of Borgo San Dalmazzo for many years – and a number of display cases containing artefacts and period objects tell the story of a place that has profoundly shaped the life of Borgo San Dalmazzo.

Gateway to the Valleys – Traditions, attractions and landscapes of the region

Thanks to its privileged location, Borgo San Dalmazzo welcomes you as a true gateway to the valleys.

Here you can browse through objects, images and artefacts that the Municipal Council – together with the municipalities, organisations and associations of the valleys that converge on Borgo San Dalmazzo, the Maritime Alps Protected Areas and the Gesso and Stura River Park, as well as local residents – have selected and/or donated to represent their identity and guide both adults and children on a journey of discovery through the region.

The work carried out to enhance the building and fit out the spaces was made possible by European public funds:

Ground floor fit-out:

Green Community “MARGREEN – The Maritime Alps overlooking the Mediterranean”, project “Implementation of valley gateways for tourist reception”
